I think US airlines today try to hire the ugliest women possible for stewardesses. From my experience, foreign airlines still hire the hottest women they can to be stewardesses.

Back when people were still civilized and didn't wear their underwear and pajamas to get on a plane.

That is an American thing.  When I have traveled internationally I notice that people in foreign airports dress very nicely until you get to the gate for the flight to the US and then all the Americans flying home are dressed like they just got out of bed or are about to wash their car.  The Atlanta airport looks like it is the world's largest homeless shelter in the domestic terminal.
