went for a week back in the early 80s. We stayed on Wakiki Beach and rented a jeep. We never really had a plan, just took off every day looking for cool shit. I actually surfed on wakiki and watched surfers on the banzai pipeline and Wiamea(sp) . went to Maui one day. Pearl Harbor was cool. If you don't eat on the main drags you can find good food reasonable. On the main drag is terrible prices. There is a lot to do and see. I am sure it has changed radically since we were there.

If you’ve never been, you’ve got to do Oahu, specifically, the uss Arizona. Also do the north shore, Polynesian cultural center, and diamond head.

That said, Oahu is the worst of the islands…too commercialized and a big city.

Do the big island and Kauai, the garden island and long time home of jake scott before we lost him.

Went for two weeks in May. We stayed on Kona the Big Island. Went to volcano national park, but he frigging volcano didnt cooperate. It erupted the day before and day after we were there. Book a tour. They picked us up at 8am and we did the Volcano, water falls, coffee plantation, and some chocolate factory that you cant buy anywhere but there or order online. Pearl Harbor is a must. The USS Missouri was my father's ship when he was in the Navy. It was surreal to be able to walk on the same deck as he did back in 1947. We also took a ride up to Mona Kea where the observatory is, then we drove down to Hilo and drove back around the Island to where we were staying. It is EXPENSIVE however. What usually cost me 180-200 bucks at the grocery store cost over 400.

I've only been to Oahu, but if you have time, plan a day or two trip to one of the other islands.  Less populous, and touristy.  I didn't get out to the Arizona when I was there because they had a safety issue with the dock and cancelled my trip.  You have to make reservations in advance, usually a couple of weeks at least as it fills up.  Check out the Bowfin and that museum over there too.  Do a Luau.  The one up by the Disney property is good.  It's called Paradise Cove.  Also, definitely get up Haleiwa and check out the north shore.  Some cool shops and small restaurants up there that are great.  If you shop up there, their sales tax rate is only 4 or 5%, so you can actually save money on clothes and things you can buy on the mainland for the same price, especially things that are on sale.  Get up to the north point of the island Kawela Bay.  That's the area where they filmed some of Jurassic Park.  The scenery is something else.  They have tours, but I didn't do one. On the east side of the island right off of the Kalanieana'ole Hwy, you can roll by the former site of the Robin Masters estate from the original Magnum PI.  Obama and his buddy built two mansions on the site, but the guest house is still there right next to the highway.  If you're so inclined, you can do some snorkeling at the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve.  At least visit it.  Also, hiking up Diamond Head is nice.  It's a decent hike, but the scenery is unbeatable if you make it to the top.  If you're looking for tourist gifts or t-shirts or something like that, hit up the Aloha Stadium swap meet.  They have everything that you would buy in any gift shop and more, and for much cheaper.  I'd also probably skip the Dole Plantation.  It's just a tourist trap, but I did enjoy the little train ride that takes you out through the fields while telling you about the history.
