Number 2 player and number 1 OT likes Kirby--can Jere

spare the money?

Mark Matthews is a name that Georgia fans are going to want to learn fast. He is the No. 1 ranked offensive tackle and the No. 2 overall player in the country and is someone that Georgia has been pursuing for quite some time. But this past weekend he finally reciprocated that interest.

In fact, he sent a clear message that Georgia can’t ignore.

“Got to talk to Coach Kirby, you just get that feeling at Georgia, it’s a winning program, you get that winning feeling when you step on campus,” Matthews said via athlonsports.com. “And I like it. … Not to be weird, but the aura they have, Georgia’s a good place.”

5-star OT gives Georgia news they've been waiting for
Those are some kind words to say about Kirby Smart and Georgia, but it gets even better than that. Matthews also announced the top three schools in his recruitment and Georgia made the cut. Texas A&M and Miami were also included in his top three alongside Georgia as well.

Matthews also said that he only plans to take official visits later this year to these three schools, so Georgia no longer needs to worry about any other program getting involved in this battle.

This will be a tough recruitment for Georgia to win. Texas A&M and Miami are known for being two of the biggest spenders in all of college football while Georgia prefers to save their money with high school recruits. That fact alone puts Georgia at a serious disadvantage with this five-star recruit.

But anything is possible, and it's clear that Matthews is very interested in Georgia right now. It remains to be seen if that interest results in a commitment, but for now the Bulldogs have a chance to land the nation's best offensive tackle.

I don't understand the obsession with Jere and NIL money. The university doesn't provide any NIL funds, the collective(s) do. Why would Jere have any say at all regarding NIL payments?

Am I missing something or is this just some sort of schtick?

Jere is NOT universally or even University popular. He sees his role as being a fund raiser and standard bearer. Football is the big injun that powers the train. He wants the loot but not the responsibility of controlling hundreds of athletes with raging hormones.

His power flows from Dr. Michael Kahn, IMO. Accusations of tax fraud have surfaced, I have been told-- Innocent as far as I am concerned.

I am just poor white trash, and I could be incorrect. Heck, I had to sell my last pair of Gucci loafers recently. The Power Elite no longer welcome my input on how to be a winner AND also look and act as a winner.

Can you smell what the Shootist is cooking?

Dr. Michael A. Kahn made his fortune in his family business, running wine and spirits wholesale and distribution company. He played hockey in his youth and later became the owner of a hockey team. He bought the Charlotte Checkers from Steve Luquire, Mark Richardson, Félix Sabates, Carl Scheer and Jerry Zucker on June 28, 2006.

Kahn moved the Checkers from the ECHL to the AHL, after acquiring the Albany River Rats from Walter Robb on February 10, 2010 and relinquishing the ECHL franchise at the end of the season. He sold a majority stake in the franchise to Zawyer Sports & Entertainment led by its founder Andrew Kaufmann on July 15, 2024, but retained a minority stake the franchise.

Kahn also became a minority owner of the Checkers' NHL affiliate, the Carolina Hurricanes, on November 3, 2011. He sold his stake in the Hurricanes to Tom Dundon in early November, 2018.

I think the role of every university president is to raise money and show the flag. I remember when I was a student, Fred Davidson was the president and he was pretty universally disliked as well. His big push was for faculty to publish and secure research dollars.

I don't know much about Kahn, but I think he, like Don Leebern, made his money the old fashioned way. He inherited it. A quick search of Al Gore's interweb looks like Kahn may be preoccupied for a little while.

Champagne Mike Adams was the answer to all our nightmares. But, alas, he has gone to his great reward.

University presidents are like county school superintendents, pure politicians.
