I asked a patrol deputy in Jacksonville who roused me for waking in the city hall parking lot while white, "Officer, what does that script written on your back fender say?" He responded, "It says, Serve and Protect."

I asked, "Which of those are you doing right now, Sir?"

He charged me with disorderly conduct and failing to obey a lawful command. When we got to the jail, me in cuffs, the shift commander, Col. E. Bratford, saluted me and said, "What the Hell is this, Jenkins?" Patrol Officer Jenkins looked sick. He claimed I was casing vehicles to break into. The good Colonel said, "You flocking idiot, that is the Mayor's top aide."

Jenkins became a bus driver in Palatka.

This is a slippery slope to discuss. I agree the ACCPD is somewhere between Barney Fife and the 1935 NYC police department. But, there's another side to this too...

1. I can't cover this one here...but, the group in question has done enough to frustrate any person with a functioning brain. There are so many BS "get off easy" laws in Athens, most of the arrests that are made turn into nothing....even the ones for the more egregious crimes.
2. There is and has been a huge feud that rages between UGA and the ACC Government. The Mayor and the City council are not good enough people to be called POS.
3. You have to be a "special" person to be a cop in Athens. I mean like, really special...the students of today aren't what they/we were 30 yrs ago...they'll push you to your wits end and beyond with stupidity. The cops have been frustrated for years on this because they make arrests and nothing sticks or even gets prosecuted. At least they changed out the DA here...don't know yet if it's helped.

The official smell of the city is weed. The official car is Dodge products and older Nissan Altimas with front and rear quarter panel damage. Aggressive driving is rampant. The homeless population alone would be a full time job if the local laws allowed.

That's about as far as I can go and keep it on this side.

Funny, I haven’t seen a police officer walking around downtown in years. You can’t walk ten steps without getting harassed for money by homeless etc.

Officers must be saving their energy for the late shift.
