It's safe to say that the Hurricanes wouldn't be in a position to compete for a CFP Championship this season if not for the work that Cam Ward did carrying the offense while Cristobal was continuing to rebuild the roster in 2024 and the leadership and big-game experience that Carson Beck brought last season. Both players are a big reason why the Hurricanes are in a position to go all-in this season with player retention and a top-dollar investment in another high-end transfer QB, Darian Mensah.
But Hurricanes football GM Dennis Smith has spelled out what the philosophy for roster building is and that is to build through recruiting and player retention to ease the reliance on the transfer portal. It's a method that's easier said than done and most coaches pay lip service to it (see Norvell, Mike), but recruiting the right players and building through those efforts is serious stuff for Cristobal. Paying top dollar for transfer quarterbacks year after year can force some difficult choices with player retention. That is something that Miami is trying to avoid.
