· We lost 65 a little over a year ago

· He was one of the great UGA football board contributors from the very beginning
· He was an “Athens boy” who did well – Read the obit….he was VERY successful……….
· I taught at Appalachian State for 32 years, but live in Lenoir……
· (My father was a professor at UGA, I went to Athens High/Clarke Central, and I am a “Double Dawg;” I worked for the Holiday Inn/Benson organization for 10.5 years in Athens)
· 65 and I “met” many years ago on an earlier DAWG board
· At that point in his life, he was retired
· He lived in two places, as many people in this part of the world do
· He and his wife Jenny had a house at the Elk River Club - https://www.elkriverclubnc.com/
· This is a very exclusive, gated golf community in the North Carolina High Country….right down the road from Boone
· (The club was designed by Jack Nicklaus)
· They “summered” there to escape the heat
· Their winter home was a beautiful condo at Sea Island (They were members of both clubs)
· We talked for a number of years online, and then had dinner with them one night at Elk River
· This turned into a very special relationship
· We visited with them at their home at Elk River and went down for a visit at Sea Island
· My wife and I would usually do one UGA football game a year with Greg and Jenny….suffice to say, he had GREAT tickets
· We had some amazing dinners/lunches with them in some special places…..
· Greg and Jenny gave a great deal of money to the UGA Museum. We had lunch one day with the Director of the Museum in his office…..
· They also gave much money to the UGA special collections library. A number of dinners at the library when they would bring out very special pieces in the collection
· Eventually, the two places become too much, so they sold them both and moved back to Athens – A very nice house in Five Points
· His mother lived in Athens and lived a very long life…….so she was always in the picture…….
· At the end, he and Jenny moved to a nice house in Presbyterian Village………The last time I saw him was at a dinner there one night
· Greg grew up in Athens; knew everybody; and knew all the background “stories”
· His connections at UGA were second to none. He knew all the big players………
· Between his Athens stories and his UGA stories……we really enjoyed just listening to him…….
· He provided very rich background perspective………….
· We were very sad to lose him. I feel as if much of our connections with Athens and UGA were cut off when he left this earth……..
· His love for UGA was very deep. Few people have contributed more money to UGA than Greg did…….he “walked the walk”
· There is a GREAT Georgia Bulldog in heaven these days………
· A vivid memory. Husk restaurant had just opened in Charleston and was a huge hit……write-ups everywhere
· We went there for lunch during one of our trips to the “Holy City” and who should be there eating lunch? Yep…..Greg and Jenny….
· (They loved “Garden and Gun” magazine and visited their offices in Charleston often……..once again…..they knew everybody!)
· Sorry for rambling……..I’ve been meaning to write this tribute for some time……….With our common Athens background we knew MANY of the same people........
