Enforcement vs. Reality

The Rule: Technically, players must have their mouthpiece in their mouth during live play.

In Practice: Enforcement by officials during games is famously lax.

The Dangle: Many college players let their mouthpiece dangle from their facemask or keep it outside their mouth to breathe or talk easily, even though it violates the strict letter of the rule.

Against rule but not enforced, now I know, not gonna let it bother me any more.

I think now that you just have to HAVE a mouthpiece. It's obvious it doesn't have to be in the mouth.
