AC replacement
#1
Well, I have received quite the education on air conditioning system costs this week.  I had no idea prices had gone up so much.  I received quotes for a new 5 ton system with gas furnace from dealers for all the major brands.  The prices ranged from $23.8k to 14.8k.  The range of prices on the same systems between contractors is significant in one case there was a $7.9k difference on the exact same equipment, with the same warranty on parts and labor.  In another case the higher SEER units were unavailable from the manufacturer and the contractor quoted a price for a less efficient unit that was within $425 of a quote for the top of the line Trane system.  The system I paid $8k for 14 years ago was quoted at $19k and $21k by two contractors.  I am going to go with the Trane XV20i, as it’s the best value for the price, but $15k is still a heck of a lot for an ac system.

Replaced a 3 ton unit with gas heat 2 years ago. I put in  the original in 1996 for $2800 and replaced it with basically the same unit for $6000.

I’m about to do the same. What’s the timeframe for installation?

Trane has disappointed me in South GA. We bought and gutted a house in 2006 and got a Trane installed. Died in about 12 years. I think they have a 25 year warranty option now that you pay for. I'd definitely get an extended warranty, maybe not 25 years but at least 15. The unit we replaced has been running and was still running since 1978 and was never replaced. Figured a new one was needed so we went with Trane. Folks used to have pride in their products.
