No. 8 Georgia tallied three runs in the top of the 10th inning to secure an 8-6 win over Georgia Tech and clinch a berth to the NCAA Super Regionals in front of 3,745 fans at Foley Field on Sunday evening. Georgia advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the fifth time in program history and the first time since 2008. The Bulldogs played in the College World Series that year, falling to Fresno State in three games in the championship series. Georgia will host NC State in the NCAA Super Regionals next weekend at Foley Field. NC State exited their Raleigh regional undefeated, winning three games in convincing style. The two teams will play a best-of-three series from Friday-Sunday, June 7-9, or Saturday-Monday, June 8-10. Game schedules for Super Regionals will be announced on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

“That was maybe the most amazing baseball game these two rivals have ever played,” UGA baseball color analyst Jeff Dantzler proclaimed after the 4 hour, 7-minute classic. The Yellow Jackets, (33-25) held a 5-2 lead through two innings. The Yellow Jackets had stung the Bulldogs for four runs in the bottom of the second inning. The No. 7-national seed Bulldogs began chipping away at the 5-2 Tech lead with Condon’s RBI single in the top of the fifth. Bulldogs’ freshman Tre Phelps took another bite out of the lead with a solo home run in the top of the eighth, and then Kolby Branch came through with a lead-off homer in the top of the ninth made it a new ball game, 5-5.

It was indeed a game of heroics, none bigger than junior pitcher Chandler Marsh (2-0), who was brought into a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning. Georgia pitching had issued eight walks, three of them in the ninth, when Marsh was brought into the pressure cooker. Marsh ran the count on Payton Green to 3-2 before delivering a defensive gem covering first in sliding fashion after first baseman Corey Collins was drawn into the infield on a chopper.

Georgia struck for three runs in the top of the 10th to go up 8-5, Corey Collins delivering a 2-run double after Fernando Gonzalez’s sacrifice bunt drew an errant throw that pushed the first run of the frame across the plate.

Leighton Finley came out of the bullpen in the 10th — his first relief appearance of the season — with runners on first and second and no outs. Tech’s Cam Jones delivered a single through the right side to load the bases, but Finley settled to fan Drew Burress, induce a sac fly out off Matthew Ellis’ bat and a groundout to Charlie Condon to end the game.

This marks the first time Georgia baseball has advanced beyond NCAA regional play since the 2008 Bulldogs finished runners-up in the CWS. Ironically, that Georgia team beat a Georgia Tech team in regional play before knocking off a North Carolina State team in Super Regionals.
