It is a 3 star, $300 a night hotel. It isn't nearly as stuffy and highbrow as many think. The state owns the whole island and there is a lot there that looks like a govt run operation.
I like King and Prince on St. Simons much better.

If you don’t mind being on the northern part of the island the Villas By the sea is fantastic. It’s not highbrow by any means. Very quiet and the best restaurant on the island is in the parking lot. (driftwood bistro). Also walking distance to driftwood beach.

The last time I stayed there a huge wharf rat was coming down the outside steps. The biggest damn rat that I have seen in a long time. My bride checked us out quickly.
Stayed at the Westin there back in April it was nice. I spoke at a rural hospital association thang, they comped the room during my stay. I had no complaints. Drove down there completely on backroads. Dublin-Mt Vernon-Uvalda-Baxley-Surrency-Jesup-Brunswick. No traffic . Only stopped by 1 redlight the entire way. Allman Brothers all the way down and back. Got my mind right for a while.

Jekyll isn’t weird at all. It just doesn’t have all the “entertainment” most places offer. Doesn’t have as many restaurants and places to stay as SSI. You have to create your own entertainment. Some of us kind of enjoy the “weird” of fewer people and less congestion.

Spent many summer vacations on Jekyll.. the old 5br that slept 12 right on the beach shared with family. My old man and Uncle drank Buds all week, while we swam in the world largest swimming pool. His words when I’d ask why we didn’t rent a house with a pool. My girlfriend is going next week with her family, I won’t. Told her I know all about Jekyll and it’s more fun on a Schwinn and a Santa Cruz skateboard with Bones wheels.

You can walk a mile offshore at Jekyll or SSI and you still won't be in water that is over your head. We went to Surfside, below Myrtle, when I was a kid. Two weeks in a four bedroom, 2 bath, house with 10 people in the house and no A/C. Two families and always a couple friends who came along. The dads only came down for a long weekend in the middle because they had to "stay home and work". I'm sure they enjoyed the time away from the wives and kids. They let us kids do pretty much whatever we wanted to do. We'd walk a mile or so up the beach to the pier and pavilion after supper. We'd stay up there until 11 or 12 at night and then walk back home. Our ages ranged from 10 to about 5. They would lock our parents up today if they let young kids like that run around loose at night like we did. The big treat was when we would go into Myrtle Beach proper a couple nights while we were there. Again, the adults left us on our own with a couple dollars each and instructions to meet back at the car at 10 or so. We saw a lot of stuff on those nights.

My favorite place at MB was the Gay Dolphin store..Just like JD Howell’s in Appling..had one of everything. My senior HS grad trip I gave money to the machine that analyzes your signature by predicting your future. I have it framed in my office. It’s been spot on so far.
