If she hit him first as happened last time, perhaps all his moves were defensive.  None of us really know what happened. Yes, he could have easily avoided all the problems by not making a baby with a crazy lady, but it's well past that point now.

I personally would do my best to avoid hitting a woman and try to just get away, but if it was a case of protecting myself from severe bodily harm, I would do what was necessary.

I had an acquaintance arrested for spousal abuse of a crazy ex for putting bruises on her wrist and forearm.  What really happened was he injured her a little as he disarmed a knife wielding nut case that was going to kill him.  Charges against him eventually were dismissed.
