Remember the days of getting ready to dodge the family Christmas Eve Meal, to watch Dooley’s Dawgs getting ready to play Stanford (and lose by (1) point) in 1978 BlueBonnet Bowl on this night that year? Do you remember watching Rex Robinson warming up kicking left footed field goals in the Houston Astro Dome (then missing what would have been a chip shot during the game). Rex was a great kicker, but must have partied hard the night before as he had an off game for him, with the TV broadcast team gushing over our All American kicker during the pregame. We have come a long way Dawg Nation!
Merry Christmas ?

Yes, i remember those days, some are really bad memories, Was it me or what, seemed like most of our bowl games back then we lost and it look like our players were hung over from partying the night before. Then i heard stories later on that Erk and others would have to get players out of the bars, help them back to the hotel , players passed out on the sofa in the lobby. Yes, we have come a long way. GATA Kirby.... Go Dawgs, Right ON!!!!!

Dooley's bowl record, 8-10-2, sort of shows what kind of coach he was in the grand scheme of things. Take out the Herschel years and Dooley was a 7 to 8 win coach. He was good at winning the games he was supposed to win and throwing in an upset win most years to spice things up. He also dominated tech and UF and those two things really kept him in the good graces of the fan base.
Bowls bitd meant a lot more than they do today. I read yesterday there are 46 bowls now. That means 92 teams are playing in a bowl. It's hard to think of something with that many participants as "special" in any way.

I know some ex players from those years. They all say the whole team would generally end up partying big time on the bowl trip. They also say the other team did as well. Back then, the bowl didn't have a bunch of activities for the players leading up to the game so the team was basically on a vacation trip when they got to the bowl destination. A guy who was on the '68 team said everyone was so pissed off about not going to the Orange Bowl and playing for the NC that they partied like rock stars in New Orleans and didn't really give a crap about the game. We lost to Arkansas 2-16 in the Sugar Bowl.
Things were definitely different back then.

Dooley winning two SEC championships in his first 5 years was huge. Dawgs were awful the prior 15 years (except for 59).
