My 16 year old granddaughter is on her second church mission trip

To Guatemala.  She is receiving a real education on what it means to be poor and how difficult life can be with no formal education or resources.   That said, she is absolutely having a great time helping build clay ovens with the local villagers so they don’t have to cook indoors over an open fire without proper ventilation, and teaching young children to read and count.  She has great compassion for the children, and a true desire to help the less fortunate.  She is planning to attend nursing school after HS with a goal of becoming a neonatal nurse.  She accepted Christ as her savior and was baptized a couple of years ago and has really grown spiritually and as an individual since.

Eye opening how some people live.

Good for her but wouldn't it be better to teach the Guatemalans how to build the clay ovens themselves?

Absolutely, that is what they are doing.

Our church has been sending mission people down the central America for years. Honduras has been the area for the last several years. It IS an eye opener. But when they come back to the USA, they can hardly wait to go back. It changes those folks, and those that go. Good for your Granddaughter, she will not be the same. And the change, will be for the better.

You are correct.  She is already talking about returning on the July trip the church is planning.  She spoke with her Dad last night and has probably convinced him to go with her next time.
