2016 recruiting is down, but help may be on the way

Travaris Robinson is on this kid like glue---Four-star cornerback Caden Harris competed Sunday at the Under Armour Next Camp in Nashville, Tenn, and shut down all wide receivers during the one-on-one performance session.

It’s been a bit of a slow start to the 2026 class for Georgia, which comes into the day at No. 20 in the On3 Industry Football Team Recruiting Rankings.

The Bulldogs have five commitments — four of which rank in among the top 350 prospects nationally — but have yet to land any big fish yet. And that’s not a huge shock, as most of the top recruits in the country take their recruitments to June, July, and August before senior seasons begin.

But UGA not having a top ‘dawg in its class could be changing soon. On Wednesday, On3 VP of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong logged an expert pick in the Bulldogs’ favor to land one of the nation’s top linemen. Clemmons (N.C.) West Forsyth mauler PJ Dean is currently ranked as one of the country’s top interior offensive linemen, but Kirby Smart and Co. are actually recruiting him to play on the defensive side of the ball. They were one of the first programs to do so, and that looks to be paying big dividends.

“I like where Georgia stands with blue-chip defensive line target PJ Dean,” Wiltfong wrote Wednesday afternoon. “On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported this week that Dean has a top three of the Bulldogs, Ohio State and South Carolina. After talking with a source that has knowledge of the recruitment I’ve predicted Georgia to land Dean. His process continues but UGA is the one I think is setting the pace.”

Dean already has an official visit locked in with the Bulldogs this summer, as well as another to South Carolina. He recently dropped from more than 300 pounds down to 260, and DL coach Tray Scott has taken over his recruitment for UGA.

“It really is just that they see me as an all-around athlete, a two-way killer,” Dean recently told DawgsHQ.com. “It’s like, just knowing that they see that in me, that I should play defense there. I was kind of scared, to be honest. It was kind of scary that schools wouldn’t look at me because I’ve been dropping weight so much. I was afraid my defensive film wasn’t good enough. I was just hearing that from them and I just didn’t believe in me.”

Bulldogs looking good for two others

In addition to the expert picks for Dean, the Bulldogs also received expert picks for massive offensive lineman Malcolm Gaston and in-state safety Kealan Jones.

“It was a great experience in Athens like always when I go there and make it feel like home so this one in the main reason I keep going there,” Gaston told Wiltfong late last month. “It’s like a bigger version of my small town, but it excites me because I feel like when I get there, I can set a new standard, especially for o-line and they believe it too, so I’m really excited about that and also being not too far but not too close to home.”

Jones, meanwhile, is set to announce his commitment on April 12 and checks in as a high three-star prospect, according to On3.

“He is looking at Duke, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Michigan with the Bulldogs trending,” wrote On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons. “He has been in constant communication with Travaris Robinson since Georgia offered in January. Jones is planning to be back between the hedges next month.
