Seems like bad science, along the lines of Dr. Jeykell and Mr Hyde, with a lot more chances of bad things happening than good things, even though my analogy is sorta comparing Biology to Chemistry.

On Skin Walker Ranch they found a skull of a Dire in a creek. Plus some skeletal remains of some cattle with bite wounds that match the jaw and teeth marks of a Dire. So, perhaps they still do roam in certain parts of the country.
