Winner: Juan Gaston
There was hype around Gaston coming out of spring practice, as the freshman offensive lineman made a strong first impression. But Gaston has further emerged not only as a potential contributor for the 2025 Georgia team but as a starter at right guard.
Loser: The defensive line
If one position group does well during fall camp, it often comes at the expense of another. That seems to be the case with the defensive line. This group faced major question marks entering the season, with Christen Miller and Xzavier McLeod being the only proven contributors to this point. Georgia had a lot riding on a number of young and unproven defensive linemen. True freshmen Elijah Griffin and JJ Hanne both had their moments, but it remains to be seen if they will be consistent contributors for Georgia this season.
Winner: The wide receiver room
With how well multiple players have performed in this group, it’s hard to single out just one player as a standout. At various points in fall camp, Zacharich Branch, Noah Thomas, London Humphreys and Colbie Young earned rave reviews for their play and ability. Coming out of the second scrimmage, Dillon Bell and CJ Wiley were standouts. Wiley is just a true freshman and faces an uphill climb in passing Thomas and Young on the depth chart. But his play is yet another reason to be optimistic about this group both in 2025 and beyond.
Loser: Drama
Internally and externally, there has not been as much noise around the Georgia program compared to the previous August. Kirby Smart did not have to consistently answer questions about the state of the program with regard to its record on driving. Georgia did not have to dismiss an expected contributor on the eve of fall camp. Nor is its quarterback’s dating life earning attention on social media. At the time, those stories may not have seemed all that germane to Georgia’s on-field performance. But over the course of a year, it all seemed to have ultimately impacted the energy level of last season’s Georgia team. This August, there has intentionally been a lot of talk about fire, passion and energy. That mantra seems to have really hit home with this group of players, many whom are eager to prove they can maintain Georgia’s championship standard.
