Enforcement vs. Reality

The Rule: Technically, players must have their mouthpiece in their mouth during live play.

In Practice: Enforcement by officials during games is famously lax.

The Dangle: Many college players let their mouthpiece dangle from their facemask or keep it outside their mouth to breathe or talk easily, even though it violates the strict letter of the rule.

Against rule but not enforced, now I know, not gonna let it bother me any more.

I think now that you just have to HAVE a mouthpiece. It's obvious it doesn't have to be in the mouth.

We had to have knee pads when I last played in '73 They threw that rule out the window sometime in the last 15 years.

When I last played (‘64) we had to have mouthpiece, knee pads, hip pads, & those huge bulky shoulder pads but the inside of my well used Riddell helmet only had an internal webbing system of 5 or 7 canvas cloth straps that had been so stretched from the previous users that the only protection was the hard plastic shell thereby contributing to my brain-deadery of today ( you don’t dare ask coach Wayman Creel for a new helmet unless you want to be called a “sissy boy” and have to run 20 hills and 10 laps after practice!)
