I was at a business dinner with a guy that was from Vick's part of the world.  When he told me where he was from, I brought up Vick, and he went on for a bit and concluded with, "It's just dogs."

There are 8.1 billion humans on Earth.  If someone killed one of his family members and said, "it's just a human, there are plenty of them", I doubt he would agree with them.  There are about 900 million dogs on Earth and about the same number of domestic cats.  From a supply standpoint, dogs and cats should be more valuable than humans.
