When I was in the Air Force, in tech school, circa either late-1980 or early-1981, I was in the dorm area one day and a guy is wearing some of those really slim white-framed punk rock sunglasses. At that time, that was a pretty definitive statement as to the music you liked. I struck up a conversation with the guy, as I had gotten into The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Dictators, The Dead Boys, such as that. Pretty quickly, though, I could detect that this guy had an attitude toward me. He had told me he was from California, and I had told him I was from Georgia. He seemed to be just sort of enduring the conversation. I had told him some of the bands I liked (like that list above). He began telling me who he liked. Whaddyaknow, he said he liked the B-52s.
I sort lit up a bit, "Oh, I know who you're talking about. They're from Georgia." He got all indignant... "No they're not!!!" I told him that they were from Athens, Georgia, where the University of Georgia is located. That just made him even more convinced that I was just some kinda stupid hick. He answered back, quite loud and emphatic. "NO THEY'RE NOT!! THEY'RE FROM ATHENS, GREECE!!! SHEESH!!" and he just shook his head and turned and walked away. At that point I decided that I need not say more. He knows everything, after all. Plus, he would eventually one day make the mistake of saying that in front of somebody within his circle and he needed to be embarrassed, and I didn't want to deprive him of that opportunity. He also needed to remember that stupid hick who tried to tell him. Hmph. That said... the Rock Lobsters is the perfect name for an Athens-based minor league sports franchise.
