(05-20-2024, 04:03 PM)Replying to RockmartDawg I guess it is possible for a player to be on a full-ride scholarship at University of XYZ, and enter the portal, and end up not getting picked up? They could lose their scholarship in that scenario? [/quote] Yes. I looked it up. If they enter the portal, they can withdraw from the portal, but if they do so, the school may have already reallocated their scholarship to another player. The NCAA's official guidebook says that they should be prepared to pay for their own tuition if they don't get pulled from the portal.

If they're able to get an NIL, they don't technically need a scholarship. That cornerback that the turds just signed doesn't have a scholarship IIRC. He's using NIL money to pay his way. At least for now.

(05-20-2024, 04:36 PM)Replying to DawgWood That makes sense, and I think there's a few teams, including UGA, that are able to manage their roster with NIL money, but someone has to at least want you. The ones that get real NIL money are the ones that usually get snatched up within days of entering the portal. If you enter the portal and decide you'll pay your own way, do you really have a chance of seeing the field for the team you left? Maybe, but I bet the majority of the 1600+ that are idle in the portal right now are going to be sorry they gave up their scholarship.

FAFO…life isn’t fair. If you want to bet on yourself getting a better spot, sometimes the bet is lost. There is no safety net in real life. The players that enter the portal and don’t get a spot are finding that out real quick.

He makes some good points, but I'm still not ready to cry a river on that, for a few reasons:
1) a pretty good chunk of that 1600 are going to be guys that technically have a year of eligibility remaining but have been in college for 5 years. 2) the players that don't get a FBS spot may end up at a FCS school 3) like it or not, a lot of kids come into FBS thinking they are future all-pro NFL and don't pan out. In the days before the portal, many of those would drop out of the programs anyway. 4) like some others have mentioned, some of those players can walk on and use NIL money 5) they knew the risk when they entered the portal 6) as Judge Smails said in Caddyshack, the world needs ditchdiggers.

I wonder what would have happened if they had NIL during the Bear Bryant era?

(05-20-2024, 05:21 PM)Replying to GriffWoody I totally agree. I only want someone to write about it so that the chances they are taking becomes more obvious to these kids. A ton of them got a really lucky break to get where they are. For the ones that want to transfer for family reasons, they better know that they have someplace to go. |
