property taxes. You should be able to own your home flat out without the fear of losing it if bad financial times hit. "Owning" your home is blatantly false. The government owns it and will gladly take it if ya miss those tax payments. We paid off our house 2 years ago and I was like "whew, we finally did it" then I remembered the taxes and the wind blew the fok right outa my sails. It could still be taken away. Somebody run for office a make a bill to end property taxes after we own our home for a certain amount of years. DO IT NOW!!!

Everyone should pay better attention to the budgets of those that benefit from property taxes. Good chance those local FDs and PDs and school systems aren't getting all of that money.

I've been thinking that over, especially with the sharp spike in taxes and insurance. I was thinking, "I'll have my house paid off and that will give me XYZ extra dollars every month".
Well.. except for taxes and insurance, which that is getting to be ridiculous. So, I won't be losing my monthly mortgage payment... just most of it.
Our county does allow that you stop paying the school tax when you hit 65. The school tax is about 2/3 of your entire property tax bill. So, that'll help a little bit, at least.

I'm in favor of user fees to fund "public schools". If you have kid(s) in K-12 you pay; I don't. Already paid for mine.
