Caryl Smith-Gilbert is the director of men’s and women’s track teams at the University of Georgia.

UGA made commitment to build an Olympic sized track facility, including an indoor arena.  It will be the best such facility east of the Mississippi.

She has enjoyed such UGA finishes as 2nd at the ‘23 men’s NCAA indoor championships and a 3rd place by the women at the ‘24 NCAA indoor championships.

She will lead a contingent of 17 current and former Bulldog track stars to Paris for the Olympics.

At USC she won the NCAA women’s titles in 2018 and 2021.

Old Spec Town's would be damn proud of this. 

Spec was a friend of the family. The Pride of Augusta BITD. A couple of his childhood friends were regulars in my Grandma's store. They had that depression era pride and loyalty about all of Spec's endeavors and accomplishments. They all started running with Spec in their youth. They would get up before daybreak and run laps at old Magnolia Cemetery in Old Town. (They called it PG (Pinched Gut) . The neighborhood was in East Augusta and all the rain and floodwaters would run down the Hill in Augusta to the hill's bottom on the East Side. They were called Pinched Gut (hungry) when the floods came they couldn't get food to eat ( rain would flood the gardens and flood the streets for weeks at the time) . 

Those old guys were proud as Hell of Spec "getting out of that bottom and running straight to the top of the world" and "he did it all while that SOB Adolph Hitler watched him beat their their a$$es in every got damn race he ran".

Spec was an old school character. In some corner of Dawg Heaven, Spec, Munson, Dan McGill, VD and Erk are smoking cigars, playing poker and drinking some of Eternity's finest right now.
