Woof™..........

Despite a brace from graduate forward Hannah White, the 16th-ranked University of Georgia soccer team dropped its road opener to No. 5 North Carolina, 4-3, in front of 3,219 spectators Thursday evening at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill. For the match, UNC outshot Georgia by a 19-6 margin, although the Bulldogs scored on all three shots on frame. Junior goalkeeper Jordan Brown tallied nine saves on the evening, the second-highest total of her career.

The Lady Bulldogs Volleyball Team, ranked No. 25 in the coaches' preseason poll, host Clemson in an exhibition Saturday (1 p.m.) at Stegeman Coliseum. Georgia's regular season begins on Aug. 30, against UC Santa Barbara at the Seminole Invitational at Florida State. Sophie Fischer was the 2023 SEC Player of the Year and a second-team All-American. She is back after participating in high-level things like the U.S. National Team's training camp in preparation for the Paris Olympics or playing in the Dominican Republic. Georgia has reached back-to-back NCAA tournaments the past two seasons, for the first time since the 1990s, and Fischer is a big reason why. She was the SEC's top scorer in 2023 and ranked in the top 10 in the league in kills per set, aces per set, blocks per set and hitting percentage (.324). In 2022, she had 183 blocks, the most in the conference, and her 332 kills were second on the team to Kacie Evans' 489. In 2023, Fischer led the Bulldogs with 467 kills — Evans was second this time with 356 — and 149 blocks. The final chapter of her great Georgia career is starting now.

Fifteen Bulldogs, including a conference high five on the First Team, were included on the 2024 Preseason Coaches All-Southeastern Conference Team, according to a league announcement Thursday.

Senior quarterback Carson Beck, junior running back Trevor Etienne, senior offensive lineman Tate Ratledge, senior defensive lineman Nazir Stackhouse and junior safety Malaki Starks were named to the First Team.

Second Team Bulldog selections included senior offensive lineman Xavier Truss, junior offensive lineman Dylan Fairchild, junior tight end Oscar Delp, senior linebacker Smael Mondon Jr., junior linebacker Mykel Williams and sophomore all-purpose player Dillon Bell.  Junior defensive back Daylen Everette, senior receiver Dominic Lovett, junior punter Brett Thorson and redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Earnest Greene III concluded Georgia's selections after being voted to the Third Team.
