Two second half goals for the visitors made the difference as the University of Georgia soccer team (6-4-4, 2-2-2 SEC) fell, 2-1, against No. 4 Mississippi State (11-1-0, 5-0-0 SEC) before 1,510 spectators at the Turner Soccer Complex Thursday evening. Georgia grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a second-minute goal from graduate forward Margie Detrizio, marking her eighth goal of the season. Detrizio's goal tallied the first score conceded by Mississippi State in Southeastern Conference play and the first since its match against Wake Forest on Aug. 25. Graduate forward Hannah White's through-pass to set up Detrizio's goal marked her second assist of the season. Trailing 1-0 at the half, Mississippi State equalized with a 52nd minute penalty as Aitana Martinez-Montoya converted from the spot. A late 85th minute goal from Ilana Izquierdo was the difference maker as Mississippi State escaped with the victory late in the match. Georgia will travel for a one-match road trip when it faces Florida on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. ET in Gainesville, Fla.

Dasha Vidmanova and Anastasiia Lopata both advanced to the ITF W75 Edmond singles quarterfinals after securing second round victories at the Edmond Centre Court on Thursday. Coming in with two wins in two days, Vidmanova rode all momentum heading into Thursday as she produced a dominant first set before sneaking past a back-and-forth second to knock off Jiangxue Han, 6-1, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinal. Playing her second match in as many days after a victory in the main draw first round, Lopata was sharp in straight sets, securing a 6-2, 6-2 win over WTA #171 Lanlana Tararudee. Both players will return to action in the main draw quarterfinals on Friday as Vidmanova will meet Mary Stoiana in a match between the ITA singles top-2 ranked players while Lopata will take on the No. 7 seed and WTA #103 Valeriya Strakhova.

Georgia opens its 95th season of men's swimming and diving and 52nd season of women's swimming and diving with a tri-meet against South Carolina and Vanderbilt Friday in Columbia. Head coaches Stefanie Williams Moreno and Neil Versfeld begin their third seasons at the helm of the Bulldogs programs after both oversaw upward moves in last season's SEC and NCAA standings. Despite losing a large senior class, the men's program remains bolstered by veterans Jake Magahey and Luca Urlando. Magahey earned three First Team All-America citations and won the SEC title in the 500y freestyle last season, while Urlando returns to the Bulldog roster after nearly two seasons. After recovering from a shoulder injury, Urlando qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team in the 200m butterfly and finished 17th overall in Paris. Other notable returners for the men include school-record holder Reese Branzell, All-American backstroker Ruard van Renan, and sophomore Tomas Koski. The Georgia women's team continues to feature one of the nation's best distance squads, led by defending NCAA mile champion Abby McCulloh. McCulloh, who was just named the winner of Georgia's Joel Eaves Scholar-Athlete Award, is joined by fellow seniors Rachel Stege and Duné Coetzee to create a strong top trio. Stege turned in a terrific performance at the Olympic Trials, finishing fifth in the 800m freestyle and sixth in the 1,500m freestyle. Paris Olympian Ieva Maluka, a transfer from Arizona State, is joined by notable returners Eboni McCarty, Sloane Reinstein, and Shea Furse. Diving coach Chris Colwill enters his seventh season with the deepest roster of his tenure, featuring 11 combined divers on the men's and women's teams. For the men, NCAA qualifier Allen Mann and SEC finalist Nolan Lewis were joined in the offseason by NC State transfer and Trials qualifier Renato Calderaro, while junior Hannah Stumpf and sophomore Michelle Cummo lead the women's team.
