I got tickled at something I read the other day.

Somebody said they made one of these in wood shop when they were in junior high.

LOL! Big Grin

They are ugly. There is a line of them, about 7 or 8, at the Tesla Dealership in Chattanooga next to I-75 near the Hamilton Place Mall as I drove by last Friday.

They were designed by the guy who designed these.

Heh-heh... yes... that's it.

When I went into the 8th grade the school system decided they were going to do something different. 8th grade offered shop class, typing class, and home ec class. Historically, 99.99% of the guys took shop, with the very random girl who would take it one quarter. That's because 99.99% of the girls were in home ec and typing. You might see a guy in home ec, but you were more likely to see a guy take typing.

Well, they decided that EVERYBODY was going to take all three classes... one class each quarter. So, 1st quarter was wood shop and it was about 60/40 guys to girls. Then 2nd quarter was typing... 3rd quarter was home ec.

In wood shop the big finale of the class was when everyone made their own little wooden car that would be driven/powered by those little CO2 cartridges like you put in air-powered BB guns. They would have races and you'd work your way all the way to a school champion. It was there in that class that you saw some of those Tesla trucks. The CO2 cartridges had trouble even getting some of them to roll at all, much less win a race.

I will have to say, concerning the policy that forced us to take all of those classes.... I did genuinely learn to type in that one quarter of 8th grade. Out of all of those classes I took, I use typing 1,000 to 1 to wood shop. I do use home ec/cooking way more often than I do wood shop. But typing has proven to be the most used of the three.

In 8th grade I took wood shop and typing both for the whole year.  Wood shop had that "Lord of the Flies" feel like PE classes did in Jr. High, 100% boys and all that entails.  Over the years I've used some of the stuff I learned in wood shop but not really regularly.

Typing, on the other hand, was the same male/female mix of any other class.  I use the skills I learned in typing almost every day.

I used typing right when I started actually doing a real job in the Air Force, and I've used it ever since. We never imagined something like the internet when we were in typing class in 1975 or 1976. But, yet, here we are... and I just typed all of that out. Big Grin
