(12-12-2024, 11:15 AM)Replying to dncdawg My mom was airlifted from Warner Robins to Grady last night after a stroke. Surgery at Grady was largely unsuccessful. I was there til about 3am when she finally looked like she was getting comfortable. She's absolutely miserable and may have lost her ability to speak, as well as most of her mobility on her right side.
Tough times.

I appreciate all of y'all.
My mom stabilized. The folks at Grady are something else. She's still not in good shape at all. She does seem more comfortable until they start messing with her. She can't speak. We're not sure about how aware she is about who is there and what has happened. She told me several weeks ago that she "didn't want to have a stroke." She watched her aunt suffer through one, so that keeps popping into my mind.
Technology and rehab processes have come a long way, but the doctor told us that her mobility might improve, but her ability to speak probably won't. It really sucks, but it's part of life to have to deal with these things. 2 of my sisters spent most of the day with her yesterday, and overnight. It sounds like her next stop will be The Lodge rehab facility in WR, so at least she'll be close to family and we'll have a place to visit her while she works through this.
My sincerest thanks for your prayers. They have most certainly helped us all.

Went through the same thing with my mom a year ago last August. Rocked her world. She's much better now but not 100 %. Fortunately my mom was able to move back home after a few months in a assisted living facility.
Taking care of elderly parents is something you can't prepare yourself for. I just make an effort to visit regularly and be available if she needs something.

I have to say DNC even if she's unresponsive, and you're not sure she's aware, talk to her and treat her as if she is.
Mom was completely unresponsive, and we didn't really think she knew who we were, or that we were there. That is until I whispered something in her ear, that was very personal between her and I. I got a response for the only time in the four days between the stroke, and her death. Her shoulders shuddered like she would be crying, if she were able. I will say, that those would have been happy tears, not sad.
I'm just saying to treat her like she can hear, and understand you. She very well may.

My mom hasn't improved, and seems to have taken some significant steps backwards in the last couple of days. We are relocating her to a hospice facility today.
I really appreciate you guys all thinking about us and praying for us. I know it has helped.

Hate to hear that hospice is necessary. But hospice is wonderful and compassionate folks that help both the patient and the family. I cannot say enough good things about them and how much they helped guide both family and friends through the process. And most importantly they help support the patient's dignity, wishes, and keep them comfortable. God bless.
