WE just stayed at the Guesthouse at Graceland.  It is next to Graceland.....not far from uptown.  Not bad.  The Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis is a legend.....live ducks in the fountain.  Not far from Beale Street and Sun Records.  I have a former student who works there.  Safe.

Hell yeah. I liked Germantown and they had a great BBQ and a few good restaurants. I think there was a Mennonite or Amish place from what I recall. I didn’t enjoy Memphis BBQ JOINTS because it seemed like a lot more hype than they were worth.
You have to roll down Beale Street and watch the flippers and see all the guys who play guitars in bars
My son walked through blood from a freshly stabbed person when we were walking around. There were drug addicts hanging around just off the strip. Be DAMN careful.
I loved the live music, had to go see the Lorraine Motel and if you can go by there. MLK’s room is kept just like it was.

I ate at the Germantown Commissary many years ago, but it was real good back then.  Give it a shot.

I've been to Memphis once, stayed in a hotel downtown, hope to never go to Memphis again. Outside of Beale St., downtown Memphis totally shuts down at 7:00. The hotel staff told me everything closes early due to the high crime downtown.

I had high hopes for Memphis because of that song and hearing about the ducks at the Peabody.
