The number of horses killed in battles was truly staggering. It is estimated that up to 20,000 horses died at the battle of Waterloo. Cleaning up the battlefields after the battles were over and the armies had moved on must have been an overwhelming task.

This is the one at Ft. Riley, Kansas.  It says 1.5 million horses and mules were killed in the war. There are several others at different battlefields and other historical sites.
