year. NIL and transfer portal may be having an effect on fan interest.
ND and tOSU are two big names in college football so there can be no argument that the teams playing had small fan bases. In fact, ND probably has the largest fan base of any college team and might draw as many people who want to see ND lose as they do ND fans.

more likely the 12 team playofft is too long to keep fan interest. Should have done 8 or 6.

I thought one big benefit of expansion was that it would keep more fans interested because their teams would still be playing and they would want to see what happened if their team was knocked out.
8 would be good if they were all conference champs, there could be three rounds of the playoff, all played by teams that were conference champs, no need for any silly committee. 6 is an awkward number and would mean "at large" bids and a stupid committee. 4 was really plenty. I don't think anyone ever thought a legit contender was left out when it was 4.
I think it is directly related to NIL and the portal. Everyone I know says their interest in college football is much lower than it used to be because of the portal and NIL.
