Carson Beck’s Visuals From First Miami Training Highlight Glaring Concerns

- by Rudransh Atri

While not every team is suited up this week, a few programs hit the field for early 2025 season prep. The Miami Hurricanes were one of those teams, giving us our first look at Carson Beck, the most expensive CFB quarterback, on March 3rd, sporting “The U” logo. But there’s a glaring issue—he’s not doing what a QB should be.

Carson Beck was limited that day, still recovering from an elbow injury suffered at the end of the 2024 season. In mid-December, the 6’4” QB had surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament. He still couldn’t do much in today’s indoor facility practice in a clip posted by Rivals on Instagram, as he has still remained only “limited to practice,” leaving fans wondering about his actual progress. At least there’s some progress—his hand braces are off, a small but significant step. The decision to leave Athens for Mario Cristobal’s squad, a move that seemed like a ‘betrayal move’ to Georgia, has created undeniable hype.

Despite the limitations, Beck was actively working through Miami’s early drills, running light pass actions, executing handoffs, and staying engaged in the offense. His movements looked fluid, and while he wasn’t launching any throws, his presence alone signals Miami’s long-term vision for its offense. Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal remains optimistic about his recovery timeline, recently telling ESPN’s SportsCenter, “Carson is doing well. He’s running really fast. He’s not throwing the ba-l yet, but he’s very close to doing so, so he’s taking part in all that he can do. And he should be throwing soon, maybe in a couple of weeks or so.”

Cristobal and his staff didn’t bring Carson Beck to Miami just to wait around. They see him as the perfect fit for their system following the departure of Cam Ward, who could very well be a top-5 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Hurricanes’ offense is designed to attack defenses with a diversified passing game, and Beck’s skill set—once fully healthy—fits the mold. “He fits the scheme with a very diversified passing game,” Cristobal said last week. That’s why they remain confident in the trajectory of their program, even with Beck’s slow start to spring practices.

Beyond just learning the playbook and building chemistry with his new receivers, Carson Beck is making sure to connect with teammates off the field. He’s been active in the locker room, bonding with the guys who will be protecting him and catching his passes when he’s back at full strength.

That leadership quality is exactly what Miami needs as they look to take the next step in the ACC. His physical rehab might be ongoing, but his presence is already being felt in Coral Gables. While the Hurricanes are easing him back into action, the real test will come when he finally starts letting the pigskin fly again.

Carson Beck can’t throw (yet), but he’s already winning over Miami
Miami’s $4 million man may not be slinging passes just yet, but that’s not stopping him from making an impact at Miami. The Hurricanes’ new quarterback is taking full advantage of his limited spring reps—not with his arm, but with his leadership.

“Obviously, it’s a unique situation, surely,” Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said. “But his football IQ is really high. You can tell just in meetings and talking football with him, and I think it’s important for him to just get injected with the team—just be around and be around those guys and build rapport.”

Beck isn’t waiting around for chemistry to develop—he’s making it happen. He invited teammates over for a Super Bowl party, he’s logging extra hours in the film room, and he’s making sure to connect with teammates every chance he gets. The early returns? All positive. “He’s definitely a leader,” sophomore tight end Elija Lofton said.

At $4 million, he should be "plug and play". He shouldn't need anything more than to be given the playbook and put under center to win every game.

Just wait until he starting throwing to the other team. Cryst-O-Balls can't manage games or do simple math. They are the perfect match for each other.

Well, he didn't throw a pick vs the two ACC teams he played this year.  He did, however, threw at least one against the turds who are on The Cane's schedule
